The in-season rankings outlined below do not affect team or individual positions or entry into the national championships (CCNC). The individual season ranking affects the Draft legal allocations spots for our conference at nationals, which is explained in the last paragraph of this handout”
Team Omnium and Individual Scoring Rules:
The men’s and women’s team Omnium scores, the combined team Omnium scores and the men’s and women’s individual scores are determined from the lowest 2 or 3 conference scoring races (2 if there are 5 or less conference races during the season including the Conference championships. 3 if there are 6 or more conference races during the season including the Conference championships) plus the conference championship race (MTS)), where the points are doubled.
Team Omnium and individual scoring first begins by determining, “raw” team or individual points, which are determined for each race and will be based on the following scoring formulas for Non DL and DL races:
Non DL races – Finishers in each non Draft race will earn points based on the following formula: Points = Place, (1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, 3rd = 3 points, etc). The maximum points is one-hundred (100) for any finisher. Athletes who do not finish the race will earn 100 +1 point (Ghost Points) with a maximum of 101 points.
To calculate raw team scores, each team must have 4 athletes competing in the race. If a team has fewer than 4 athletes, the team score is comprised of the individual score of each athlete entered into the race, plus a score of 100 +1 (Ghost Points) for each unraced spot. These points are combined with Draft legal race points (See scoring below). Since a low point “raw” scoring system is used, which involves Ghost Points, all teams in the WCCTC will be part of the scoring rubric for each race, once any race has been concluded, whether they had team members compete in the race or not. The Ghost Points concept is explained below.
Ghost scoring is necessary because of the low point scoring rule adopted by USAT and for scoring fairness under the low point system. For example, without ghost scoring, if a team only has 2 athletes complete 3 WCCTC in-season races plus MTS, finishing 1st and 2nd in races they would be the lowest scoring and highest ranked team for the season because they only have 2 scoring athletes at 4 races, versus other teams who met the criteria of having 4 scoring athletes at all 4 WCCTC in season races.
DL races – Finishers in the draft-legal race will earn points based on the following formula: (1st = 1 point, 2nd = 3 points, 3rd = 5 points, etc). The maximum points is one-hundred (100) for any finisher. Athletes who do not finish the race will earn 100 +1 point (Ghost Points) with a maximum of 101 points. If a team does not have an athlete competing in the DL event, they will be assigned points for 100 +1 (Ghost Points) in order to calculate a team score.
Only the first finisher from each club scores points for his/her club. If a club has a second athlete in the race, that athlete will not score, but will displace lower-finishing athletes from other teams. The points earned from the highest placed DL athlete will be combined with the team points from the Non Draft Legal race to determine the total points earned for each team when Non DL and DL races fall on the same weekend.
Omnium Team Points/Rankings – Based on the raw scoring process outlined previously, the women’s and men’s teams from each school are allocated Omnium points for each race, in the following manner: 1st place team = 100 Omnium points, 2nd place team = 90 Omnium points, 3rd place team = 80 Omnium points, thru 10th place team = 10 points. Teams that do not have a rank or are outside the top 10 will be assigned 0 Omnium points, to determine women’s and men’s team rankings. In case of a points tie after the conference championship race (MTS), the team with the highest finishing Omnium score at MTS will have the higher rank. Season end men and women’s team rankings are based on Team Omnium and individual Scoring Rules outlined in the beginning of this handout.
The “raw” point allocation for the women’s and men’s teams are also combined and teams (men’s + women’s and men’s women’s) are allocated Omnium points in the following manner for each race: 1st place team = 100 Omnium points, 2nd place team = 90 Omnium points, 3rd place team = 80 Omnium points, etc. thru 10th place team = 10 points. Teams that do not have a rank or are outside the top 10 will be assigned 0 Omnium points, to determine combined team rankings. In case of a points tie after the conference championship race (MTS), the team with the highest finishing Omnium score at MTS will have the higher rank. Season end combined team rankings are based on Team Omnium and individual Scoring Rules outlined in the beginning of this handout.
Individual Points/Ranking – The individual season end rankings are based on Team Omnium and Individual Scoring Rules outlined in the beginning of this handout. In addition, athletes will earn individual points in the same manner as explained above for Non-Draft and Draft legal races. In case of a points tie after the conference championship race (MTS), the individual with the lowest points at MTS, highest finish, will have the higher rank. As reminder points are doubled at MTS.
Nationals and DL Spot Allocations: Please note that the WCCTC is awarded DL legal spots for the men’s and women’s DL race at CCNC (nationals) each year. The teams in the conference that are awarded these spots is based on the individual rankings at the end of the season. The number of slots can vary but typically it is 2 and the universities that each of the 2 individuals represents, earns a DL slot at CCNC. There are rolldown rules that apply to this situation so refer to the CCNC rules and Regulations from USAT, for complete details.
